SiC Projects, SiComb and Sic Nano for PicoGeo, to Culminate with Final Conference: Unveiling Innovation and Business Potential

Unveiling Cutting-Edge Technology 

The SiComb project takes the spotlight for its groundbreaking demonstration of the first-ever CMOS-compatible and ultra-broadband on-chip SiC frequency comb. SiComb, the driving force behind this innovation, has developed a new material platform utilizing SiC for photonic integrated circuits (PIC). SiC has proven to be a game-changer, showing enormous potential for generating compact, high-efficiency frequency combs within the telecommunication wavelength range due to its exceptional optical properties. 

Simultaneously, the SiC Nano for PicoGeo project has forged ahead with a novel ground strain measurement system for geohazard monitoring, leveraging the same unique SiC material. This system boasts the potential to detect strain with approximately 100 times greater sensitivity than current technology. The integration of fiber lasers for all-optical closed-loop operation further allows electronic readouts from remote sensor locations. 

Conference Highlights 

The conference, scheduled from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM in Brussels, will feature three open roundtables, focusing on critical aspects of the projects:  

  • Sic Fabrication and Characterization: Delve into the benefits, challenges, and main results obtained by the two projects, emphasizing innovation and effective material utilization within devices. 
  • Lessons Learned and Risk Mitigated: Gain insights into the experiences during the prototyping phase of project implementation, highlighting lessons learned and risk mitigation strategies. 
  • Future Steps and Market Connection: Explore the future trajectory of the projects and activities bridging the gap between innovation by researchers and market application. 

Each roundtable will feature interviews with researchers from both projects, moderated to incorporate questions from the public. 

The conference will be led by Haiyan Ou, SiComb coordinator, and Francesco La Via, SiC Nano for PicoGeo coordinator, bringing together the insights and promising ventures that connect novel ideas to successful business solutions. This event marks a pivotal moment in the intersection of innovation and practical application within the realm of SiC optical material.
